Cost Effective

Sawmill Designs’ box beams are a fraction of the price of solid beams, making it a great choice for projects that require a more budget-friendly option.

Environmentally Friendly

Box beams are a better choice when it comes to the environment because they use only a fraction of the amount of wood compared to solid beams. Sawmill Designs also offers 0% VOC Oil Finishes that are both beautiful and good for the air your family breathes.

What are my box beams made of?

Our box beams are made of live sawn white oak, a wood known for its durability and beauty. You can also opt to have your beam wrapped in authentically reclaimed barnboard.

How thick are the boards that make up my box beams?

Each board is 3/4” thick. This means the height of the interior will be 3/4” smaller than the dimensions you select and the width will be 1.5” smaller. That may be useful to know if you’re attaching a box beam around an existing beam structure in your home.

What type of wood are my box beams made out of?

All of our new wood beams are made out of beautiful white oak, a wood known for its durability and beauty. Our authentically reclaimed barn board beams are made from a variety of species such as pine, oak, elm, ash, etc.

Are my box beams heavy?

While not as heavy as solid beams (but just as beautiful!) our box beams are made from solid wood and can be awkward to lift. Plan on having additional help when installing.

What does 0% VOC oil mean?

The look of a beautifully stained box beam without comprising air quality! Sawmill Designs offers two types of 0% VOC stains, Black oil and White oil. No strong odors, cost effective, easy to clean, and durable!

Can I stain or paint an unfinished box beam?

Certainly! Our box beams are made of beautiful character white oak and can be stained or painted.

Can I hang box beams outside?

We do not recommend our box beams for outside usage. Due to extreme temperatures and humidity that comes with weather, our ceiling beams may warp, expand or contract if installed outside.

How do I install my box beams?

Find out here. Spoiler alert: it’s pretty simple.

What is a box beam?

A Box Beam, or Faux Beam, is a non-structural decorative beam that has been mitered and glued together on three sides. Box Beams are used on ceiling applications to give personality, character, and depth to higher and larger spaces. We see many of our competitors use the word “faux” to describe their beams – which is defined as “not genuine or fake”. We can say with confidence – there is nothing artificial or fake about our box beams! Sawmill Designs uses the highest quality materials with the highest level of craftsmanship – creating a box beam that surpasses our competition.

Thinking of our reclaimed box beam option?

When ordering any type of authentically reclaimed lumber, it is important to remember that no two boards are the same. That’s the beauty of using reclaimed barn siding—it oozes with character and depth! Some boards will be a deep brown or gray, while others will tend to be lighter, with hints of both brown and gray.
